In this extraordinary series, Metso delves deep into the souls of legendary artists, capturing their essence and unleashing their unparalleled energy through his lens. Prepare to be captivated by the raw power and unmistakable charisma of the musicians who have shaped the very fabric of rock ‘n’ roll history.

JUHA METSO, ARTIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER

Juha Metso’s photographs have captured attention ever since they appeared in magazines, books, and exhibitions. He always seems to be excited and impressed by what most people find uninteresting or too complex and difficult to execute. He thrives in creative collaboration with personalities that many cannot tolerate or at least keep their distance from, considering them impossible.

Metso is not one to mince words; on the contrary, he is wild and rugged. Roughness attracts him. He doesn’t aestheticize, but rather acts and photographs. Therefore, it is bewildering and almost mystical to witness how in Metso’s images, the rough becomes delicate and the tough becomes vulnerable. His pictures make you laugh, but at the same time, they make you cry, they move you and tug at the heartstrings so deeply that it almost feels embarrassing.

Metso has established himself as a storyteller through his journalistic photo reports as well as his broader visual essays. The results of his work often find their way alongside written language for presentation.

As we well know from history, images have the power to shape our perceptions of what exists. This power is even greater when the images are impressive, when we have seen fewer alternative images, and when we know little about the subject otherwise. When Into Konrad Inha traveled to photograph Viena Karelia in the summer of 1894, he could hardly have imagined that future generations would construct their impressions of the Kalevala’s singing lands based on his choices. This became possible due to several simultaneous factors: Inha belonged to the first productive generation of Karelian photographers, his images were technically skillful, visually insightful, and aesthetically coherent, and the results of his work spread exceptionally widely.
